{"id":144221,"date":"2025-03-03T09:57:15","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T09:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/?p=144221"},"modified":"2025-03-04T07:50:37","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T07:50:37","slug":"very-unwise-nigel-farage-suggests-zelenskyy-was-rude-in-white-house-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/news\/2025\/03\/03\/very-unwise-nigel-farage-suggests-zelenskyy-was-rude-in-white-house-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Very unwise\u2019: Nigel Farage suggests Zelenskyy was \u2018rude\u2019 in White House meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/tag\/nigel-farage\/\">Nigel Farage<\/a> has suggested Volodymyr Zelenskyy was \u201crude\u201d and \u201cvery unwise\u201d in his approach to his now-infamous meeting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> in the White House.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting between Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart was convened so the two leaders could discuss the raw materials deal and the US administration\u2019s attempts to end the war in Ukraine. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But it culminated in intense public shouting match as Trump rowed in behind the comments issued by his vice president, JD Vance, who claimed that Ukraine should be more \u201cthankful\u201d for US support.<\/p>\n<p>In a post to X on Saturday, the Reform UK leader said that the row was \u201cregrettable\u201d and warned that the fallout will leave Putin \u201cfeeling like the winner\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He posted: \u201cThe spat in the White House last night is regrettable and will make Putin feel like the winner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this is not the end of the story, far from it. A peace deal is essential and Ukraine needs the right security guarantees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking part in an <i>LBC<\/i> phone-in show on Monday morning, Farage was asked for further clarity on his view of Trump and Vance\u2019s treatment of Zelenskyy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He responded: \u201cWhatever the spat that occurred\u2026 let\u2019s look at the very big picture to begin with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe after three years of war\u2026 are at a million battle casualties. We have a situation now where we either go for a peace deal or this continues for year after year after year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that the longer the war goes on, the more it suits Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is interesting is that before Zelenskyy had left the White House, he\u2019d realised that he had overplayed his hand and\u2026 he was willing to go back in and sign the minerals deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually think good is going to come of Friday. Zelenskyy is going to sign the deal. I think it was unwise. Yes sure, Vance and Trump bit back. But I think in diplomatic terms, I think Zelenskyy played it very badly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pressed on whether he saw anything \u201cintemperate\u201d in Trump\u2019s language, the Clacton MP said: \u201cWhether there was or whether there wasn&#8217;t, we&#8217;re heading towards peace. We&#8217;re heading towards peace. It&#8217;s a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he would treat a guest as Trump did, Farage added: \u201cI wouldn&#8217;t expect a guest to be rude to me in my own house, absolutely not. I would expect a guest to treat me with respect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he was not \u201cdefending\u201d Trump and Vance&#8217;s behaviour, claiming he would \u201ctry not to\u201d behave like that himself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, he dismissed the pair\u2019s approach as \u201cirrelevant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Reform leader added: \u201cThis is where we all go wrong. We&#8217;re all focusing on the row that happened. Maybe the row was bound to happen anyway. Zelenskyy wasn&#8217;t ready, maybe for this, and perhaps the Americans weren&#8217;t ready for it either. I don&#8217;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also criticised Zelenskyy for not wearing a suit for his White House visit, and said he showed \u201cno respect\u201d to Trump through his choice of clothing.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cDo you know what? If I turned up in the White House, I&#8217;d make sure I was wearing a suit and my shoes were cleaned.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on Zelenskyy\u2019s military-style attire, he added: &#8220;I think there are times to wear it and there are times not to, perhaps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he went on to conceded that this is a \u201cminor\u201d point.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to Farage&#8217;s comments, shadow foreign secretary Priti Patel said: \u201cNigel Farage is completely wrong. President Zelenskyy is a hero, who has stood up to Putin&#8217;s aggression, and led his country&#8217;s defence against their barbaric and illegal invasion over the last 3 years &#8211; and it is troubling to not hear the leader of Reform say that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Nigel Farage to sit there pointing the finger at Zelenskyy is both morally wrong and diplomatically counterproductive. At this uncertain and dangerous time, one would hope that MPs of all stripes would be putting our national interest first, rather than playing politics<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut sadly, it is not surprising. Like Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of Reform UK seems to have history equivocating over Russia\u2019s illegal war in Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey said: &#8220;Nigel Farage is once again showing his true colours as Trump&#8217;s own spokesman here in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Zelensky showed courage and integrity in that room &#8211; in stark contrast to Farage\u2019s cowardly approach of licking Trump\u2019s boots.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Farage is more focused on promoting Trump and Musk\u2019s interests in the UK than British interests in the States. He was once again parroting White House talking points this morning, to the dismay of British people here at home.
