The move has put Scotland on a collision course with Westminster as the battle for Indyred2 begins in earnest.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How did we get here? The SNP has made no secret of\u00a0its\u00a0desire to hold another referendum,\u00a0but its\u00a0strong set of Scottish election results in May has renewed\u00a0its\u00a0determination to press ahead with Indyref2. The SNP\u2019s spokesperson on constitutional affairs, Tommy Sheppard MP, says people \u201chave voted to have the choice and we will make sure that they get it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet there are three key hurdles on the road to Indyref2. First, why should there be a new referendum? A lot has changed since 2014. Brexit, the pandemic and three general elections later, the UK is no longer the island it once was when Scotland initially said no to going it alone. The SNP will have to make a new case for why Scotland is better off out of the UK than in.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, the difficult task of securing a referendum. In short, Nicola Sturgeon needs the UK government to grant Scotland a new referendum. The noises coming out of Westminster would suggest that such a request is unlikely to be granted. However, the issue isn\u2019t going to just go away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polling expert Sir John Curtice suggests that Scotland may be able to hold a referendum if the question was changed, but the first minister\u2019s best bet will be to build up a consensus for Indyref2.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that the question of independence currently divides\u00a0the population and\u00a0politicians, bring us to our third roadblock: timing. The polls are neck and neck, and the consensus in Scotland appears to be that the public\u00a0wants\u00a0to wait a few years before being asked about independence again.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professor Nicola McEwan told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Politics.co.uk<\/a>: \u201cThe stakes this time are much higher for both sides.\u201d Ultimately, pursuing a referendum too early, whilst the margin is small between both sides, is the wrong strategic move for both unionists and independence supporters.<\/p>\r\n<p><blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"AkrtN22AyV\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/reference\/scottish-independence-polls\/\">Scottish Independence Poll<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content lazyload\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Scottish Independence Poll&#8221; &#8212; Politics.co.uk\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.politics.co.uk\/reference\/scottish-independence-polls\/embed\/#?secret=AnmDSGMGiR#?secret=AkrtN22AyV\" data-secret=\"AkrtN22AyV\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"about:blank\" data-load-mode=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The road to Indyref2 is a long one. Independence supporters will need to bide their time and play the long game.
