The SNP has put forward a bill that would compel the government to establish a compensation scheme for women who lost out financially from the rise in the state pension age.

The ten-minute rule bill, in the name of SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn, passed a vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday afternoon by 105 votes to zero.

Addressing the House ahead of the division, which SNP MPs forced, Flynn said: “I [introduce this bill] with no joy whatsoever. And I do so more borne out of complete and utter frustration.

“But I do so because it’s the right thing to do, and it’s the right thing to do for a number of reasons. It’s the right thing to do because we require trust in politics.

“And I think all of us at this moment in time, certainly within this chamber, are conscious of the breakdown in trust between ourselves in this parliament and with the public outside.”

He added: “We know where the public stands on this issue. We know that they believe the Waspi women should be given the compensation that they deserve. And with this bill, we will seek to provide it.”

A Liberal Democrat MP has urged the government to back a UK-EU youth mobility scheme as part of its Brexit “reset”.

Introducing a ten-minute rule bill to the House of Commons on Wednesday afternoon, James MacCleary said such a scheme “would open up opportunities for British young people to learn new skills, languages and cultures and bring all of that back with them to benefit our economy and our society. “

He said: “The government has made much of its so-called missions, mission number one, we’re told — economic growth — yet any proposal that might involve our European neighbours and contribute to boosting growth is dismissed.”

The Lib Dem added: “I call on the government to give the young people of this country a proper explanation. Many of them put their faith in the Labour Party to reverse the damage done by the previous government, but remain disappointed and frustrated.

“I know that there will be many on the Labour and Conservative benches who know that the youth mobility scheme with the EU is the right thing to do. It is time to rebuild our relationship with Europe and set our young people free.”

A former Conservative minister has called for first-cousin marriage to be banned in the UK.

Introducing the proposals in the House of Commons, Richard Holden said the children of first cousins were at greater risk of birth defects and that the practice should be prohibited on the grounds of public health.

However, independent MP Iqbal Mohamed argued a ban would not be “enforceable” and said these issues would be better addressed through education programmes.

Mohamed said: “Forced marriages must be prevented, and the freedom of women must be protected at all times.

“However, the way to redress this is not to empower the state to ban adults from marrying each other. Not least because I don’t think it would be effective or enforceable. Instead, the matter needs to be approached as a health awareness issue and a cultural issue.”

The Conservative MP Sir Gavin Williamson today proposed a 10 minute rule bill which, if passed, would require ministers to recognise formally the Republic of Somaliland.

Sir Gavin said: “I recognise that maybe a nation of 5.7 million people does not seem significant to Britain, but it is significant. It plays a pivotal role in terms of Africa, and I urge this House to take the action that is required to support the Republic of Somaliland and make sure that we deliver for the people of Somaliland as they have defended what we value so dearly, which is democracy and freedom”.

The Reclaim party MP Andrew Bridgen today proposed a 10 minute rule bill to ban the promotion or discussion of gender transitioning in schools.

After listening to Mr Bridgen’s speech, Labour MP Sir Ben Bradshaw responded in a bid to kill the bill at first reading.

In the resultant division, MPs rejected Mr Bridgen’s bill by 40 votes to 34 – a majority of six.

Mr Bridgen said in his speech: “Children are not guinea pigs. It’s high time this house took charge and stopped allowing ideologies passed down from mad scientists which treat them as such”.

Sir Ben responded: “This bill is not about the welfare of young people. It’s not about the smooth running of our schools. It’s about a cynical but completely transparent attempt by a conspiracy theorist, who is too right wing even for today’s Conservative party, to stoke the culture wars on the backs of our most vulnerable minority”.

The Conservative MP Sir Oliver Heald today proposed a 10 minute rule bill which, if passed, would compel ministers to examine the advantages of offering financial assistance to parents whose children undergo prolonged hospital care.

The Labour MP Dan Carden today proposed a 10 minute rule bill which, if passed, would give right to users of health and care services to be accompanied by ‘care supporter’.

Mr Carden has previously spoken of the trauma his family experienced when they were unable to see his father, who was dying of lung cancer in hospital.

He said today: “No one in this House was left untouched from the trauma of the coronavirus pandemic. I think that we can all agree on the principle that whether it’s whether it is the state or a privately run care home or a hospital, it does not have the right to separate us from our family and loved one”.
